In the summer of 1940, France had fallen to Hitler’s Germany and the threat of an invasion across the English Channel was feared and expected. To launch an invasion, Britain’s defences would have to be weakened. The battle for control of the skies, the Battle of Britain, had begun. On 18 June, Winston Churchill addressed Parliament, acknowledging that a pivotal moment had come. He uttered the words that have since become legend, “…if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say: This was their finest hour."
