The dragon is significant in traditional Chinese culture as one of 12 animals that participated in the Emperor’s Great Race, held to determine the order of their appearance in the lunar calendar. Celebrating the fifth lunar animal, each coloured quadrant coin portrays a Dragon King from Chinese folklore – Ao Shun, the Black Dragon/Ao Guang, the Azure Dragon/Ao Qin, the Red Dragon/Ao Run, the White Dragon.
