The First Fleet left England in May 1787 and arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788. On the long journey every effort was made to keep the convicts in good health with proper food, clothing, exercise and cleanliness. Fresh food was provided whenever possible to minimise scurvy. Each transport had a system of barricades, crossbars and bolts designed to secure and confine the convicts but once clear of the land they were unmanacled and allowed the freedom of the foredeck.
