King George VI acceded to the throne in 1936, following the abdication of King Edward VIII. The Melbourne Mint struck the first complete year of King George VI coinage in 1938. All denominations, except the sixpence, were released with new reverse designs during 1938-39. The Perth Mint commenced producing copper coins in 1940, and silver shillings were minted there in 1946. Various Australian coins were struck overseas between 1942 and 1944. Some 1951 coinage was minted in England. A commemorative florin was issued in 1951 for the 50th anniversary of Federation. King George VI died in 1952 and was succeeded by Queen Elizabeth II.
