Australia first competed at the Winter Olympics in 1936, sending just one athlete to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. For decades, results were modest, as winter sports lacked the infrastructure and popularity of their summer counterparts. That changed dramatically in 2002, when Steven Bradbury won Australia's - and the Southern Hemisphere's - first Winter Olympic gold medal in short track speed skating, in one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history. Since then, Australia has steadily grown into a respected winter sports nation.
