The Royal Australian Mint is proud to support the Australian Winter Olympic Team as they take on the world at the 2026 Milano Cortina Games. Australia first competed at the Winter Olympics in 1936, sending just one athlete to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. For decades, results were modest, as winter sports lacked the infrastructure and popularity of their summer counterparts. That changed dramatically in 2002, when Steven Bradbury won Australia's - and the Southern Hemisphere's - first Winter Olympic gold medal in short track speed skating, in one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history. Since then, Australia has steadily grown into a respected winter sports nation.
