Dorothea Mackellar has been described as a ‘lyrist of colour and light’ and this is no more evident than in her evocative poem The Colours of Light. Stanza after stanza overflow with rapturous descriptions of the unique qualities of Australia’s light, how this is reflected in our distinct flora and fauna and the glorious atmosphere it creates. The Colours of Light first appeared in Mackellar’s second book entitled The Witch-Maid, published in 1914.
