Ever since Australian Rules Football was created in the mid 19th century, women have been playing the game and participating in their own local competitions. However, it took more than 150 years to establish a professional female league. In 2010, the AFL commissioned a review of women's football in Australia, which recommended the created of a professional national women's competition. This competition was initially planned to start in 2020, but growing support advanced the start date to 2017 - introducing the AFLW GIANTS.
