Communication between South Australia and Europe took weeks until the Overland Telegraph Line was joined on 22 August 1872. In under two years, construction parties, led by Charles Heavitree Todd, erected 36,000 poles, and strung a wire across 2,839 km of the dry Australian outback from Port Augusta to Port Darwin. Suddenly communication with London took less than 7 hours, and Australians rejoiced and never looked back - their geographic isolation was immediately and forever ameliorated.
