Later there were stints as a builder and, in 1892-93, he carried his swag on a punishing trip to Bourke. He met optimistic prospectors like Dave Regan and his mates, listened to their stories and laughed with them as their plans went awry. It is Lawson’s consummate control of pace and climax that makes this story one of his most loved and admired.
