In 1915, Albert Einstein proposed his General Theory of Relativity, suggesting that gravity is not a “force” but a bend in the space-time continuum. A total solar eclipse observable from Australia provided scientists with an opportunity to show that the positions of stars shift due to the Sun's gravity. Teams arrived from around the world to observe the eclipse from Wallal, Western Australia around 300 kilometres south of Broome. Measurements from photographs of more than 100 stars, using the Lick Observatory's coronagraph, provided proof that Einstein's theory was correct.
