Graeme Base’s Animalia, first published in 1986 now celebrating 35 years, is a classic Australian children’s picture book, renowned for its superlative illustrations and inventive concept. Animalia is organised around the alphabet, A to Z with each of the 26 detailed illustrations representing a different letter. The challenge for the child is to identify the numerous animals and objects beginning with the letter, which is also incorporated into the illustration in a short description, such as “lazy lions lounging in the local library” or “crafty crimson cats carefully catching crusty crayfish”.
