Canadian-born Allan Moffat tried for four years to win the ATCC with his famous Trans-Am Mustang, yet always fell just short. His first crown came in 1973, under new rules and driving a Falcon GT-HO. Moffat's most controversial title win, though, was his fourth and final one in 1983, after he had sensationally switched from Ford to a rotary-engined Mazda RX-7 following years of off-track lobbying for a power-boosting modification called peripheral porting to challenge his V8-powered rivals.
