2019 50c International Year of Indigenous Languages PNC

According to the United Nations, 40 per cent of the almost 7,000 languages spoken around the world are in danger of disappearing. Language is not just a communication tool. For the approximately 370 million Indigenous people around the world, it is central to defining identity, expressing history and culture, preserving rights and participating in all aspects of society. To raise awareness of the crucial role languages play, the United Nations General Assembly has declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IY2019).
