The ‘Rum Rebellion’ of 1808 was provoked by the clash of two strong personalities; the ambitious ex-military John Macarthur, and the cantankerous governor William Bligh. Bligh’s attempt to break the economic stranglehold of the powerful ‘Rum Corps’ in the fledgling colony of New South Wales led to Australia’s only successful military coup. This coin commemorates the dramatic events of 26 January 1808.
