The story of Australia's most beloved food product stretches back to 1922. It is a tale of technical and marketing nous that began at the Fred Walker Company. Dr Cyril Callister was hired to develop a spread from one of the richest known natural sources in the Vitamin B group - brewer's yeast. In 1923, the tasty, spreadable Pure Vegetable Extract hit the shelves, but dislodging Marmite from its dominant position in Australia proved a difficult task.
