Only once has there been a military coup in Australia - the deposing of Governor William Bligh on 26 January 1808 which years later became known as the “Rum Rebellion”. The colony remained under military control until the appointment of Lachlan Macquarie in 1810, arriving with his own regiment to replace the “Rum Corps”. Sydney Cove had been established as a garrison town in 1788, with the NSW Corps in place to support the governor of the penal settlement. With little infrastructure the corps soon came to monopolise trade, with rum a key object of barter and drunkenness rife.
