Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali (from the Sanskrit Deepavali, “a row of lamps”) is a vibrant festival celebrated annually by Hindus around the world, in October or November. While origin stories vary, Diwali marks the return of the god Rama from 14 years in exile, symbolising the triumph of light over dark and good over evil. Celebrations involve public firework displays as well as family feasts and the exchange of gifts. Homes are typically decorated with lights, candles and lamps (diyas), to help Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, find her way to each home.
