German troops launched their Spring Offensive in March 1918, breaking three years of trench-war stalemate and threatening to capture the strategically vital city of Amiens. The Australians were rushed south from Belgium to defend Amiens and fought a series of actions which included Villers Bretonneux. On the night of 24 April 1918, Australian troops of the 13th and 15th Brigades made a night-time assault on the German positions and recaptured the town. From Villers-Bretonneux, the Allies launched their own counteroffensive bringing an end to the fighting on the Western Front.
