2018 $50 Australia Double Sovereign Gold Proof Coin

Sovereigns were first minted in 1489 under King Henry VI to help establish the legitimacy of Tudor power following the Wars of the Roses. At the time it was the largest coin ever struck in England and was a commanding symbol of his authority. This Australian Double Sovereign portrays St Edward’s crown, a laurel wreath and the words AUSTRALIA and DOUBLE SOVEREIGN, historic elements of Leonard Charles Wyon’s original Type I reverse. To mark where this modern tribute was created it also features the inscription PERTH MINT.
