The 1918 Armistice of Compiègne that silenced the guns on the Western Front, known for the forest location at which it was signed. At 5am on 11 November 1918, Germany agreed to the terms of the Armistice drafted by the allies’ Field Marshal Ferdinand Foch, which came into effect at 11am Paris time, effectively brought the war to an end. At 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month a minute’s silence is observed in memory of soldiers whose lives have been lost during military service. Initially known Armistice Day, 11 November became known as Remembrance Day following World War II.
