2017 50c The Battle of Bullecourt The Western Front Uncirculated Coin

On 11 April 1917, Australian troops of the 4th Division carried out an unsuccessful attack on Germany’s formidable Hindenburg Line near the village of Bullecourt in France. A further attack was made on 3 May by troops of the 2nd Division. Bitter fighting continued over the following two weeks, resulting in 7482 casualties and reinforcements being drawn in from the 1st and 5th Divisions. By the time Bullecourt was captured, British attention was shifting north into Belgium, where in the coming months the Australians would suffer their greatest losses of the war.
