April 25th each year, commemorative ceremonies are held around Australia. The origin of Anzac Day goes back to the Gallipoli campaign, when our troops entered their first major conflict, landing on the Gallipoli peninsula early on 25 April 1915. The first Anzac Day ceremony was held a year later, to honour the 8,141 Australians who lost their lives at Gallipoli. It became a national day of remembrance during the 1920s, honouring Australians who died during the war. Today, we remember all Australians who have died while serving in armed conflicts and peacekeeping missions.
