During the Great War, more than 3,000 Australian nurses joined the war effort; 2,546 served abroad with the Australian Army Nursing Service, others served with organisations such as the Red Cross. They ministered to the sick, wounded and dying in Egypt, Lemnos, Greece, Britain, India and on the Western Front, in hospitals, casualty clearing stations and on hospital transports. Many nurses were decorated for their bravery, but by war's end 25 had given their lives. Australian nurses first served in an overseas conflict during the Boer War (1898-1902), in which 60 nurses served in South Africa.
