This year marks the centenary of the completion of the 1,690-kilometre transcontinental railway between Port Augusta, in South Australia, and Kalgoorlie, in Western Australia. The first sod was turned at Port Augusta on 14 September 1912, the beginning of five years of arduous construction work across the Nullarbor desert. Featured are advertising posters from 1930 and 1960. The stamp on this cover shows a figure on a camel viewing a G-class locomotive as it speeds across the desert towards Perth. The train shown on the cover itself is a G2 locomotive at Tarcoola, South Australia.
