Henry Lawson (1867-1922) was one of the leading lights of Australia’s early literary culture. Lawson is best remembered for his short stories, which illustrate his gift for observing human nature and interactions. His highly economical text, well-calibrated dialogue and carefully modulated tone give rise to portraits that speak to the times. “The Drover's Wife” represented on one stamp in this issue commemorating Lawson's life and literature; the other stamp depicts “Mitchell: A Character Sketch”. Together they speak of the resourcefulness required in turn-of-the-century rural Australia.
