Much of Australia’s war in Vietnam was spent patrolling Phuoc Tuy province. On 18 August 1966, months after the formation of the 1st Australian Task Force Base at Nui Dat, 108 Australian and New Zealand troops fought a pitched battle against more than 2000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in the rubber plantation of Long Tan. 18 Australians died and a further 24 were wounded in what was the largest action fought by Australian forces during the Vietnam War. On 18 August 1987 Long Tan Day became Vietnam Veterans Day and has been observed in Australia ever since.
