“In come the dollars, in come the cents…” augured the jingle marking Australia’s introduction of decimal currency on 14 February 1966. The impact of the new currency can hardly be overstated. Not only did it require that individuals reconceptualise the method through which they approached commercial transactions (the three-unit system replaced by two units) it meant designing, producing and distributing new currency; converting monetary machines; training banking and retail staff, producing new price signage; and a huge public education campaign to ensure a smooth transition.
