Anzac Day, April 25, is recognised as a ceremonial occasion to reflect on the cost of war, a day of commemoration for all Australian and New Zealand soldiers who died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations, and the contribution and suffering of all those who have served on behalf of their country. The Anzac spirit embodies the qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice which were all demonstrated at Gallipoli, the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War in 1915.
