Letters have a strange talent for bridging distance and yet accentuating it; for bringing correspondents together and yet emphasising the space between them. In 1916, messages of love, life and family; packages of necessities and small luxuries; and newspapers produced on home soil and telling stories in a familiar accent all helped ease the hardship of life on the Western Front. Whether hurriedly scribbled or carefully crafted, written on service postcards or on tatty scraps of paper, any word from the boys on the battlefield was eagerly awaited by those at home.
