Australia’s unique native animals found a new home when Stuart Devlin’s wildlife designs were chosen to adorn the nation’s decimal currency in 1966. The Echidna, a rare and distinctive creature, adorns the 5c piece. Echidnas are monotremes and are only found in Australia and Papa New Guinea. Only two species of monotreme – the Echidna and the Platypus - exist today. They are a fitting inclusion in the artistic array of coin designs that inhabit the wallets of Australians.
