Australia’s unique native animals found a new home when Stuart Devlin’s wildlife designs were chosen to adorn the nation’s decimal currency in 1966. Posing elegantly on the 10c coin is his depiction of the Superb Lyrebird, one of Australia’s most intriguing and beautiful animals. Known for its shimmering, lyre-shaped tail feathers and astonishing vocal talent, the lyrebird can mimic almost any sound in its environment. While its natural habitat is the forests of south-east Australia, its coin-pressed likeness travels much further.
