The Gallipoli, or Dardanelles, Campaign took place on the territory of the Ottoman Empire between April 1915 and January 1916. The operations originated in a joint British and French mission to capture the capital, Istanbul, and secure a sea route to Russia. On April 25 at around 4.15 am on a still spring morning, the first soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, made an amphibious landing on the Turkish Gallipoli peninsula. Although ultimately unsuccessful, the campaign has become a landmark in the development of the Australia national identity.
