This coin celebrates the publication of Matthew Flinders’ historic journal, A Voyage to Terra Australis, which he penned whilst imprisoned in the Isle de France (today’s Mauritius) after circumnavigating Australia during the Napoleonic wars. It was Flinders who first confirmed that the great southern land was a single continent, and of which he named ‘Australia’. His two-volume opus recounts the 1801 journey of the HMS Investigator along the previously unmapped south coast of Australia. Flinders completed his journal in 1810 and it was eventually published in 1814.
