On 16-18 July 2014 it will be 100 years since French aviator Maurice Guillaux (1883-1917) made the first air mail fight in Australia. It was, however, another eight years before any sort of regular air mail service began, and then only on select regional routes. Guillaux's flight from Melbourne Agricultural Grounds to Moore Park in Sydney was made over two days, with seven stops enroute and a flying time of just 9¼ hours. Governor-General Sir Ronald Munro Ferguson welcomed Guillaux as he touched down in Sydney on what was at the time the longest air mail flight worldwide.
