With auspicious beginnings as one of Australia’s most expensive and expansive construction projects, Parliament House has always been more than a functional government building. It is a place of people, purpose, and pride. The opening of Parliament House on 9 May 1988 was the culmination of an international design competition and almost a decade of planning and preparation. Designed by New York architects Mitchell/Giurgola to convey an open invitation to its visitors, it still welcomes close to 100 000 people to its grand rooms, inner workings, and many treasures every year.
