The official foundation of Australia’s national capital took place at midday on 12 March 1913. Lady Denman, wife of the then Governor-General Lord Denman announced that the name of the new Australian capital would be Canberra. The site of Canberra had been selected in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne. Following an international competition for the city’s design, plans by Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin was chosen.
