The koala is a unique Australian marsupial recognised by its bear-like face and thick grey fur. This tree dwelling creature is believed to get its name from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘no drink’. This is because the koala sources its hydration from a specific variety of eucalyptus leaves and is only known to drink in drought situations or when ill. The coin’s reverse depicts an adult koala peering through the branches of a eucalyptus tree.
