2013 $10 Bicentenary of The Holey Dollar & Dump 1/10oz Gold Proof Coin

The original holey dollars and dumps, Australia's first official coins, are now rare and valuable. This coin marks two hundred years since Governor Macquarie saw the need for a common currency that couldn’t be drunk or lost to overseas merchants. Convict forger William Henshall was given the job of creating new coins from Spanish pieces of eight. The centre of each coin was cut out and each part then counter stamped with “New South Wales 1813” and its new value, which was intentionally inflated beyond that of the coin's silver content.
