The coin’s high relief reverse and obverse are minted on concave surfaces to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die. The coin’s reverse depicts two young kookaburras sitting on a tree branch against a background of bush flowers and leaves. The design includes the inscription AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA and The Perth Mint's ‘P’ mintmark. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the coin’s obverse.
