Melbourne Zoo has been caring for wildlife for 150 years and is currently home to six Western Lowland Gorillas. This endangered species is one of three subspecies of gorilla who live in big troops of up to thirty which are organised into intricate social structures dominated by an older adult male. Gorillas can climb trees, but are usually found on the ground, finding plentiful food in the thick forests of central Africa to satisfy their vegetarian diet, such as roots, shoots, fruit, wild celery and tree bark and pulp.
