In 1930, Phar Lap galloped home to easy victory in the Melbourne Cup, with jockey Jim Pike in the saddle. The big chestnut was a symbol of hope for a nation feeling the bite of the Great Depression. Of his 51 starts, Phar Lap had 37 wins, three second places and two thirds, and in his 21 races during 1930 he was beaten only twice. So popular and mythologised was Phar Lap that his heart now rests in the National Museum of Australia, his hide in Melbourne Museum and his skeleton in New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa.
