2010 150th Anniversary of The Burke and Wills Expedition Proof 2 Coin Set

On 20 August 1860, nineteen men set out from Melbourne to traverse Australia from south to north, a feat never achieved before - Burke and Wills expedition. In celebration, the Royal Australian Mint in partnership with the Royal Society of Victoria, has released this two coin Proof Set. The 20c coin illustrates Burke and Wills setting out and the $1 coin illustrates King, the sole survivor of the expedition, sitting under the ‘Dig Tree’. On both of the designs, the camel tracks represent the expedition route, and the footprints are symbolic of the assistance from Aboriginal people.
