2008 $1 Inspirational Australians Mary MacKillop Uncirculated Coin

The Royal Australian Mint’s Inspirational Australians series commemorates unique Australians who have made an extraordinary contribution to our society. The first release honours Mary MacKillop, a teacher and Catholic nun born in Victoria in 1842. In 1866, she founded the Sisters of St. Joseph and set up a parish school for underprivileged children in South Australia. Under Mary’s guidance, the order established schools and charitable institutes across Australia and was devoted to the care of orphans, neglected children, the homeless, the sick and the aged.
