From its beginnings in Melbourne 150 years ago, in school and community matches without standard rules played in local parks, Australian football has evolved into a truly national game. In 1858 Tom Wills, Secretary of the Melbourne Cricket Club, wrote a letter suggesting the establishment of a “foot-ball” club with a “code of laws” to keep cricketers fit in winter. His suggestion was taken up, and the following year rules were formalised that form the basis of the contemporary game.
