Bigbelly Seahorse (Hippocampus abdominalis) is known for their variegated shades of yellow, brown, orange, white, grey or mottled. Often coloration adapts to suit their marine surroundings. It lives in shallow water sea grasses and sponge gardens in south-eastern Australia and New Zealand. It is the male, not the female seahorse that becomes pregnant, carries eggs and gives birth to juveniles. Seahorses have a prehensile tail which allows them to hold onto objects such as sea grasses and sponges.
