In 1606, Dutch East Indian Company (VOC) Captain Willem Janszoon discovered the Australian coast. Since that discovery, the relationship between the Netherlands and Australia has always been close. The bond between the two countries is emphasised by minting both a Dutch and an Australian commemorative coin. Designer Irma Boom designed the Dutch Five Euro Commemorative Silver Coin: The Australia Coin (.925 11.9g). In doing so she used six globes, each of which show a different perspective of the world. Designer Wojciech Pietranik designed the Australian Five Dollar Silver Commemorative Coin (.999 37.13g) featuring the Duyfken ship which Captain Willem Janszoon sailed when he discovered the Australian Coast. In cooperation with the Royal Dutch Mint, the Royal Australian Mint placed the Dutch mintmastersign (course-setting sail) and a special sign in the form of a tulip on the Australian commemorative coin.
