2006 50c 50th Anniversary of Barry Humphries as Dame Edna Everage PNC

For more than 50 years Humphries has exposed the national psyche with his outrageous characters, particularly the internationally renowned megastar Dame Edna Everage. Moonee Ponds housewife Mrs Norm Everage journeys from the tiny stage of the University of Melbourne’s Union Theatre (19 December 1955) in the sketch “Olympic Hostess”. Originally a cutting parody of Australian parochialism and suburban complacency, the Moonee Ponds housewife has since evolved almost beyond recognition into the internationally famous, egomaniac megastar Dame Edna Everage.
