The tournament was first played in 1905 as the Australasian Championships at the Warehousemen's Cricket Ground in Albert Park, Melbourne. In 1927 it became the Australian Championships and in 1969 the Australian Open. In 1988, it moved to Melbourne Park. The coin’s reverse features the curved line of a tennis ball seam. The design incorporates three tier representation of Melbourne Park. Also included in the design is the Australian Open logo featuring the words The Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific. The coin's obverse bears the Ian-Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
