2002 $1 Melbourne Mint 130th Anniversary with Gold Inserts 1oz Silver Proof Coin

This coin commemorates the 130th Anniversary of the opening of The Melbourne Mint in 1872. The Melbourne Mint, is considered to be the ‘Mother Mint’ of the Royal Australian Mint, as much of the latter's expertise in and knowledge of minting emanated from the Melbourne Mint. On the reverse of the coin are two gold ‘cameos’ of the Shield and St George designs that featured on the first sovereigns produced by the Melbourne Mint in 1872.
