Approximately half of the total medals won by Australia in the Olympic Games has been achieved in the pool. Swimming is by far Australia's most successful aquatics discipline. The program includes 100 and 200 metres freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke events. All four strokes are utilised in the 200 and 400 metre individual medley races. Freestyle swimmers also compete in races of 50, 400, 800 and 1500 metres. However, only women swim 800 metres freestyle and the 1500 metres freestyle event is just for men.
